Understanding The Branches of Yoga

There are many branches of yoga but before we look at these, what is yoga? Yoga is supposed to have originated from a Sanskrit word meaning "Union", and is based on a philosophical system which is aimed at achieving total harmony between the body, the mind, the heart and the soul.

A follower of Yoga will have soon understood that all branches of yoga can assist as well as educate how to conduct methods of advanced concentration of mind over matter.

These skills once adopted are purported to be capable of bringing the physical body under control of the human spirit and will.

With its ancient roots going back over thousands of years, Yoga is a discipline which s greatly developed over the centuries resulting in a variety of yoga practices and branches.

Each of the branches of Yoga being practiced today has developed spontaneously to serve a variety of different needs and purposes and as an an offshoot of Yoga and not a substitute for it. Each branch serves the purpose of harmonizing the equilibrium between mind and body.

The main branches of Yoga are detailed as follows:

  • For those interested in increasing their state of mind and well being, the practice of hatha Yoga, considered to be one of the primary forms of modern physical therapy could be the branch for you. Apart from the practice of meditation, hatha Yoga also teaches a series of significant postures (known as asana in yoga terminology) and breathing exercises (known as panoramas).

  • Probably the best known branch of Yoga is Karma Yoga, practiced by John Lennon and Yoko Ono amongst millions of others.

    Karma Yoga follows the principle that all that occurs in our present life has been brought on as an effect of something that happened in a previous one.

    This “cause and effect” theory encourages people to resist the temptations of a previous life, and lead your present life in such a manner that your next life will be free and pure.
  • A branch of yoga, known as raja Yoga, places a major emphasis on the discipline of meditation. Known to be the purest form of classical yoga, raja yoga requires a much more complex form of training than most of the other branches. People who go on to study raja Yoga have already studied hatha Yoga, either because they found hatha insufficient or it was a stepping stone on the way to prepare their body for more advanced training. Many religious groups have been known to devote themselves to this path, being closer to a monastic or contemplative lifestyle.
  • A branch of yoga directed mainly to those who wish to study the philosophy of jnana Yoga in depth, this obscure branch implies by its title the development of intellect through study. This path of study is based around traditional yoga scripts and texts.
  • Bhakti Yoga. is yet another popular and more mainstream branch of Yoga, promoting and sustaining the principal of devotion. The message transmitted by bhakti Yoga is that all forms of creation are divine. This means that all followers of bhakti Yoga are more inclined to tolerate, accept and respect any form of life they come in contact with.
  • These are only a few of the various yoga branches or paths. However they are the principle ones. Any one choosing to follow the path of Yoga is more or less certain to find what they are looking for in one of these branches of the ancient philosophy.
